Moving to Charlotte and wondering what this city is like? High-class cool jazz can be found the first Friday of each month in our very cool Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Uptown Charlotte, the Queen City named after Queen Charlotte, betrothed to King George III of England. And if you enjoy mid-century art and know how to bop your head to the American art form know as jazz, check the YouTube video below, friends.
Just another one of the very reasons to relocate to Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina and halfway between Raleigh NC and Atlanta GA. Now, back to the jazz. This quartet has two Hilton Head favorites that have and do perform in one of the East Coast's best little jazz venues, Jazz Corner. I've seen bassist Ron Brendle accompany Hilton Head resident Mose Allison (RIP) at the Jazz Corner and pianist Noel Friedline is a regular there. But, back to Charlotte. Ziad Rabie is the Artistic Director of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art's Jazz at the Bechtler series and his Ziad Jazz Quartet is the house band, so to speak. He has recorded with the likes of James Brown, Charlotte's John P. Kee, the Impressions and more as well as played with or opened for Ramsey Lewis, Grover Washington Jr., Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, and Buddy Rich, not to mention Jon Smith of one of my favorite bands of all time, Edgar Winter's White Trash. But I digress.
Don't miss it on the first Friday of each month at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art with the Ziad Jazz Quartet. These concerts have sold out repeatedly and both shows - 6 to 7:30 pm or 8:15 to 9:45 pm - are drawing standing room only crowds each month. More info at Bechtler.org or by calling 704-353-9200.
