The history of the area is fascinating and to live in Biddleville gives you not only great access to Charlotte Center City but also a part of history. Johnson C. Smith University is a vibrant bright spot close to Uptown. Originally named "The Freedmen's College of North Carolina", the name was changed to "Biddle Memorial Institute" when a Philadelphia widow made a generous pledge to support the school. As the area grew around it, Biddleville became a notable section of Charlotte. When Colonel W. R. Myers (think Myers Park) donated 8 acres, the name was changed to "Biddle University". Finally, in the early 1920's, a Pittsburgh widow donated handsomely in the name of her late husband, the namesake for "Johnson C. Smith University" (JCSU).
