How Did Streets in Providence Downs South Get Their Names?
Have you noticed the unusual street names in Providence Downs South? If you're an equestrian (or a better) you may have noticed that the streets in Providence Downs South are named after Kentucky Derby winners. For instance, an early Kentucky Derby winner in 1893 was LOOKOUT. Another one, BLACK GOLD won in 1921 and his owner Rosa Hoot was the first woman in history to breed and own a Kentucky Derby-winning horse. AGILE? Won in 1905, but finished last in his final race (later reduced to the role as a carriage horse for the family). SMARTY JONES won over seven million dollars in his lifetime including being the Kentucky Derby Winner in 2004. The 1982 winner was GATO DEL SOLwho started the race against the 21-1 odds of winning. VENETIAN WAY won in 1960, GO FOR GIN in 1994, and PROUD CLARION in 1967. And then there's STRIKE THE GOLD. After his win in 1991, he went on to lose his next 12 races. FUNNY CIDE won in 2003 and had the highest earnings of any New York-bred horse in history. ARISTIDES was the first Kentucky Derby winner (1875) and was honored with a life-sized statue in the Clubhouse Gardens of Churchill Downs. CANNONADE won in 1974 and finished 2nd in both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. SIR HUON (1906) was named after a character in a German opera.
